Jenny Whalley
12th September 2026
Jenny is a mixed-media artist, originally from Zimbabwe. She gave a good demo, using watercolour, wax crayons, aquerelle coloured pencils and Neocolours. She clearly explained her techniques and the colours she was using and had some interesting stories to entertain the members.
Jenny painted the substrate first on unstretched, Sanderson Watercolour 300 gsm paper, with a watercolour wash, using a mop and flat brushes. She scrunched paper towels to take off the paint for the clouds. She used wax crayons randomly across the page, to resist the paint. The distant buildings were indicated in light grey, using a wide, flat brush. She used a black aquarelle pencil for definition, for example, people, benches, lamposts etc. She drew the detail in pencil over the painted background, then added colour, where needed, on top. She also removed paint with tissue to make different shapes and marks. Jenny said Neocolours are brilliant for adding colour - by adding water, you can make them flow like watercolour and Faber Castel aquarelle pencils, which are also water soluble, give effective colour.
Jenny painted a loose scene of London, without worrying too much about the exact location of the buildings, or following perspective rules. Finally, the odd crane was added here and there to give reality to the scene. You can see how she built up the painting below, along with a photo of the excellent finished piece.
